Winter Newsletter December 2010

A Few Words from the President

Dear Loon Lake Park District Association Members and Residents,

How fortunate are we to live around our pristine Loon Lake, this precious gem in the Adirondacks.  While our residency status may vary, some of us are seasonal and some are full time residents, our mutual enjoyment of what the lake offers provides a common bond for all who reside here.  The year round social, recreational, and aesthetic opportunities that abound offer us a quality of life unlike any place else.  As we observe the seasonal transitions and enjoy the beauty that is associated with the Adirondacks, it is easy to conclude that there can be no better place to live.

As your President and on behalf of your elected Board of Directors, I want to convey to you our commitment in serving as advocates for protecting the quality of the lake.

Working cooperatively with the Town of Chester, the Loon Lake Park District Association (LLPDA) has taken positive initiatives in addressing the Eurasian Milfoil issue, an issue being addressed by many other lakes within the Adirondack region.  This past year, an independent contractor, Lycott Environmental Inc was hired by the Town to more aggressively identify and remove milfoil from the lake.  Our volunteers assisted in this process and some 61000 plants were removed.  In addition, our volunteer lake stewards worked at the public launch throughout the summer inspecting boats and educating boaters on problems related to milfoil.  The Lycott Environmental Report is provided within the attached newsletter and is a must reading for all of us.  The presence of milfoil on the lake is a reality and we must continue to explore treatment options that are available to us.  Milfoil control will remain our number one priority and I encourage you to become involved in our volunteer efforts.

On a more positive note, the LLPDA annual water testing program reveals that the water quality of the lake is very good.  The results of the 2010 water testing program are provided for your review.  The testing program is annually performed by volunteers and we are grateful for their participation.

This past summer, Loon Lake Park District Association volunteers provided many social and recreational opportunities for our residents. Notable highlights included the fishing derby, the water carnival, the boat parade and the annual Marv Cole Loon Lake Golf Tournament, proceeds from which go to support charities within the Town of Chester.  Our annual boater safety course enrolled several young people who earned their NYS Boater Certification.  Also, the buoys on the lake were carefully set in the spring and retrieved in the fall to safely guide us from hazards.

Our Fall Membership Campaign succeeded in attracting several new members.  If you are not currently a member, we encourage you to join the LLPDA.  This is our organization working on behalf of our lake and our residents.  We welcome your suggestions, comments, and volunteer time and I encourage you to call any Board member or myself.

Best wishes for the coming year,
Ed Griesmer

Bald Eagle Spotted on Loon Lake
This magnificent Bald Eagle was spotted fishing in the marsh area behind Sonoma Point in the early fall. This photo was taken by Dennis & Peggy Verdow's grandson.

If you happen to capture some of the diverse wildlife around the lake in a picture, we would love to include it in our next newsletter as well as the website photo gallery.

  • The current EPA recommendation for body-contact recreation is fewer than 100 colonies/100 mL
  • For fishing and boating, fewer than 1000 colonies/100 mL
  • For domestic water supply, for treatment, fewer than 2000 colonies/100 mL.
